diy 10 gallon aquaponics | Pandanus Minimus

0

diy 10 gallon aquaponics

I had done Pandan in aquaponics in a growbed without constrain and it is a difficult plant to contain. Its roots are very invasive and the plant itself will be vigourous which will colonize the entire growbed if not check.

Last year I tried using a large pot to make sure it does not spread.

This larger container do well in preventing it from spreading and at the same time making it more manageable.

With #SilosGrowbed style that I am currently experimenting, decide to try this invasive plant in one of the tubes.

Without testing well never know whats the outcome. Wanted to see how big it will grow and when it multiply how it is going to be contained within the Silos.

Will it be a pigmy pandan or large and spread out on it own ? The roots, will it spread out from bottom of the silo tubes ?

Ill be testing more plants as times goes and hope Ill learn something interesting.

diy vertical garden aquaponics | More Silos to Test

0

diy vertical garden aquaponics

Testing few more silos tubes for my Silos Growbed system, cut few blanks to make the necessary silo pots.

These silos are made for 12" growbed, above are 8" blanks for it. Manage to get 28 blanks from one uPVC tube.

Not going to be over ambitious here, simple plants will do.

Will sow some other plants like tomatoes and eggplant etc.

Due to lack of space in growbed, silos are place within existing growbed.

diy aquaponics japan | Seneye Reef review

0

diy aquaponics japan

Recently I bought seneye home during Aquarama 2013 for S$149 (US$120). It come with free upgrade to seneye reef which actually the one that I really want. I wanted a PAR (Photosyntecthically Active Radiation) meter that senye reef able to measure. The other feature such as thermometer, pH meter, NH3/NH4 meter, dissolve O2 meter, are good to have but I dont really need it. The ability to connect to database server and able to view from anywhere using mobile phone is great but again I dont really need it. Basically I bought it because of the PAR meter.

Seneye website says it is ideal for planted tanks but to be honest it is not really. For example, the pH can only measure 6.4 to 7 but in planted tank especially if you are using ADA aquasoil, the soil will normally maintain pH of around 6 to 6.2. They do plan to release new slider which is suppose to be able to measure lower pH. Nevertheless it is the cheapest PAR meter available in the marked today, compare it to Apogee MQ-200 which cost US$349 + US$80 delivery charge.

The differences between all 3 seneye model

It is ingenious design, the whole sensor is basically a light/color sensor and thermometer. pH and Ammonia was measured using small plastic piece called seneye+ slider. On the slider, there are two square pad in which my guess will change color depending on pH and ammonia level then the light sensor read the color. That mean the same device can be use to measure many different water parameter, just need different slider.

seneye+ slider

According to the seneye website, the PAR function should be use only to measure against light reading taken from other seneye device or seneye PAR organism table (plants or corals). According to seneye normal PAR device are aimed for use in greenhouse where they are more interested in red spectrum. Seneye PAR meter on the other hand is more sensitive at light below 450nm. Im kind of disappointed, because its means I cannot compare my data with other hobbyist around the world who are using other brand PAR meter. Furthermore the plants list (seneye PAR organism table) is very limited, just fraction of the freshwater plant species that I can get from my LFS. I do wish the come up which software patch for the measurement. It should not be that difficult, my guess it is just gain coefficient.

Using seneye PAR meter Im able to find out why I cannot grow red plan on my 2ft where I have no problem in my 3ft. My 3ft PAR measured on water surface is around 200 uE m2sec where as my 2ft is only 150 uE m2sec. I need to match up my 3ft if I want to grow red plant in my 2ft tank.

Below are 3 days worth measurement on one of my tank. The NH4 dip was because I turn off the filter, interestingly pH is also increase during the filter off at the same time as NH4 dip. There defenetly connection between to but I do not know why. I need some googling to find out. Amonia level stable at 0.005 ppm.  Temperature stable at around 28.5C. Dissolve O2 stable at 7.7ppm although Im expecting it deep during night and go up during photosynthesis.

Final word, it is a great product with affordable price. Although a bit disappointed due to its PAR response curve different that other PAR meter but it is sufficient if I just want to compare between my own or friend tank.

P.S. all pictures are from seneye website except for the 3 days masurement

diy aquaponics how to | Silos Growbed Flood Drain Aquaponics

0

diy aquaponics how to

What is Silos Growbed.

This is the term that Im going to use to describe the potted media base flood & drain aquaponics. It is a mouthful to say and giving it a short name will be easier for me. Furthermore its good to be able to identify a planting method by a reference term.

What I am trying to do now, it making the aquaponics less costly and more efficient, thats the reason for the gutter growbed flood & drain system that I am currently experimenting. Taking a step further, why not make a new style by using cylindrical tubes or containers that is filled with media and stick it into a flood and drain system.

The container can stand in either media or on its own in a flood & drain water. Each containers for ease of reference I called it a Silo from that tall cylindrical silos or those missile silos. Each functioning silos is a mini growbed on it own and thus will be treated like any growbed.

There are 3 type of silos.
  1. Growth Silos, this is a silos that have plants growing in it.
  2. Dormant Silos, is a silos filled with media in the flood and drain system without any plants. This is to provide a ready planting area and also to increase media surface area.
  3. Blank Silos, this is an empty silos that being use to take up space within a growbed in order to provide support for other silos or to gain access to certain area in the growbed.
Figure below is a simplified diagram of the Silos Growbed System

For trial I am using 4 inches uPVC pipes with its venting cowl as a silo unit. Each of this unit will take up space within a growbed or a gutter system, if gap are required they could be filled with a Dormant or Blank Silos.

Silos are filled with hydroton initially up to the strainer top.

Plants, I am testing and use the existing cili plant as a trial and Basil from cuttings. Once the plants or cutting has been place inside the silos, top up hydroton to full.

Testing Basil from cuttings apart from cili transplant.

Cili below, these are old plants that I redo to these silos.

I do not have a dedicated growbed for the Silos, temporarily I place it in the present set.

This is a trial, there will be areas that I need to look at, for example the tube size and using media filled silos with only water on the outside. This style are suitable for plants like Tomatoes, where they dont have rhizomes and tubers constrain by the silo tubes.

Updates 26 July 2015

Silo Clips

  • A clip that I made to hold the silos together, so that it can be individually work on without much disturbance to the other free standing silos within a growbed.

The whole idea of this experiment is to make aquaponics cheaper and easier to do. Ill update the progress,

diy water pump in aquaponics system | Plant Grown in Low vs High Tech

diy water pump in aquaponics system

3. Riccardia sp. (mini pellia)
Mini pellia grow in high tech tank grow denser compare to the one grown in low tech tank. At low tech tank, the branch grow longer before it split. It is hard to see from the seperate picture unless put both side by side and take the picture.
